What Issues Can Eyelid Surgery Treat?

Here are some of the most common issues that our blepharoplasty can treat:

Ptosis (Drooping or Sagging Eyelids)

This is the most frequent reason why our patients approach us for eyelid surgery. Ptosis is most commonly caused by aging, which makes the skin lose elasticity. Sometimes, ptosis can impair your vision. Eyelid surgery can treat the appearance of ptosis by tightening the skin and muscles of the eyelids. This can help you achieve a more youthful and alert appearance while improving your vision.

Puffy Eyelids

Blepharoplasty can eliminate the fatty deposits that cause puffy eyelids, resulting in a smoother and more contoured eye area for our patients.

Under-Eye Bags

Aging can lead to bulging and protruding fat pads beneath your eyes, creating under-eye bags. Eyelid surgery can address these bags by removing or repositioning the excess fat, giving you a more rested and refreshed appearance.

Excess, Sagging Skin

Excess skin, skin folds, and wrinkles around your eyes can result in a tired or aged appearance. A blepharoplasty can remove your excess skin and smooth out your wrinkles, rejuvenating your overall appearance.

Hooded Upper Eyelids

Some of our patients approach us for this surgery because they have hooded upper eyelids. This is a cosmetic feature marked by having excess skin on the upper eyelids, creating a hood. The hood can obscure your natural eyelid crease and make your eyes appear smaller. Hooding can be removed by eyelid surgery, creating a more open and refreshed eye appearance.

Impaired Vision

If excess eyelid skin or drooping eyelids are obstructing your vision, a blepharoplasty can remove the obstructing tissue and help you see more clearly.

If you have any of these issues, schedule a consultation with our clinical team to discuss your treatment options.

The Eyelid Surgery Procedure

Your eyelid procedure will be expertly performed by our highly skilled cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Tuggle, who will do his best to ensure that any incisions are as discreet as possible. During your initial consultation, he will help you determine whether upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, or a combination of both is best for your needs. Dr. Tuggle specializes in facial procedures and has extensive experience with combination facial surgeries.

Upper and lower eyelid surgeries are similar but differ mainly in their approach. Both procedures may involve reshaping, redistributing, or altering the fatty tissue and muscles around the eyes to improve their shape, firmness, and overall appearance—as per your needs. Dr. Tuggle will remove any excess fat, skin, and tissue to effectively contour your eye area.

What Can I Expect During Upper Eyelid Surgery?

Dr. Tuggle performs eyelid surgery under intravenous sedation or light general anesthesia. For upper eyelid rejuvenation, we use radiosurgery to make tiny, well-hidden incisions along the natural lines of the upper eyelid. Excess skin and occasionally protruding fat and excess muscle are removed using a special laser that prevents bruising. We close the lid with dissolving sutures to minimize discomfort. The stitches are hidden in the natural crease when the eye is open. You can expect only mild swelling and minimal bruising, thanks to the cutting-edge advantage of laser technology.

What Can I Expect During Lower Eyelid Surgery?

The lower lid blepharoplasty was designed to improve the puffy, protruding skin below the eyes. Dr. Tuggle makes a fine incision inside the lower lid with a laser that prevents bleeding, bruising, and swelling almost completely. He may also make an incision just below the lower eyelashes to remove loose skin from the lower lid and then close it with dissolving sutures. Noticeable bruising usually only occurs when skin is removed along with the fat. The skin heals extremely well in the lower lid, and fortunately, there is rarely a noticeable scar line.

EYELID LIFT 2

Recovery from Your Blepharoplasty

For most patients, recovery from their eyelid lift surgery typically takes about two weeks. Our cosmetic surgeon will give you personalized directions to aid your recovery. Here are some general guidelines and tips to ensure a smooth healing process:

Be sure to follow these directions and any other personalized advice given to you for your strongest chances of an optimal recovery.

Additional Treatments

Sometimes, the wrinkles around the eyes are etched into the skin and cannot be removed by a blepharoplasty procedure alone. We tailor our eyelid lifts to individual patient’s needs to enhance a firmer, more youthful appearance. Adding some additional skin wrinkle treatments, such as laser resurfacing, chemical peel, or home skin care with tretinoin (Retin A), to your procedure may bring you even closer to the brighter, more energetic look you deserve.

Brow Lift

If you have low or droopy brows, we recommend having a brow lift prior to an eyelid lift to maximize blepharoplasty results. Removing excess upper eyelid skin in someone with low brows usually causes the brows to appear droopier. You can learn more about brow lifts here.

Blepharoplasty Eyelid Lift FAQs

How do I know if I am a good candidate for an eyelid lift?

You may be a good candidate if you have drooping upper eyelids, under-eye bags, excess eyelid skin, or a tired appearance around the eyes. Ideal candidates are generally in good health, do not smoke, and have realistic expectations about what surgery can accomplish. A personal consultation is the best way to determine whether blepharoplasty is the right option for your concerns and goals.
The answer depends on your specific concerns. An upper eyelid lift is typically recommended for patients with loose, drooping skin on the upper eyelids that creates a tired appearance or, in some cases, interferes with vision. A lower eyelid lift is designed to address under-eye bags, puffiness, and loose skin beneath the eyes. During your consultation, your surgeon will evaluate your anatomy and recommend the approach that will best help you achieve your goals.
There is no perfect age for eyelid surgery. Many patients seek treatment in their 40s, 50s, and 60s when signs of aging become more noticeable. However, some younger patients pursue blepharoplasty earlier due to inherited under-eye bags, excess eyelid skin, or naturally heavy eyelids. The best candidates are those whose concerns can be effectively addressed through eyelid surgery rather than those who meet a specific age requirement.
A well-performed eyelid lift should help you look refreshed, rested, and more youthful without making you look like a different person. The goal is not to change the shape of your eyes, but to remove excess skin and address puffiness that may create a tired or aged appearance. Most patients find that friends and family notice they look more awake but cannot immediately identify why.
For some patients, yes. Excess upper eyelid skin can sometimes hang over the eyes, restricting the upper field of vision. Removing this excess tissue may improve peripheral vision and make everyday activities such as reading and driving more comfortable. If vision impairment is a concern, your surgeon can determine whether functional benefits may be achieved through treatment.
While no cosmetic procedure can stop the aging process, the results of eyelid surgery are long-lasting. Many patients enjoy their improvements for years before considering any additional treatment. Excess skin and puffiness removed during surgery do not immediately return, making blepharoplasty one of the longest-lasting facial rejuvenation procedures available.
Incisions are carefully placed within the natural creases of the upper eyelids or hidden along the lash line or inside the lower eyelid whenever possible. As healing progresses, scars typically become less noticeable. Following your surgeon’s aftercare instructions can help support optimal healing and scar appearance.
Yes. Many patients choose to combine blepharoplasty with procedures such as a facelift, brow lift, neck lift, facial fat transfer, or skin resurfacing treatments. Combining procedures can often provide more comprehensive facial rejuvenation while allowing you to recover from multiple treatments during a single healing period.
